THE PLUG: Empowering Diverse Communities Through Service
The Plug Program is a youth volunteer and leadership pathway designed to connect high school-aged youth—especially racialized, underserved, and newcomer youth—to real opportunities in Hamilton’s community spaces. Through hands-on training, event placements, and mentorship, participants gain the confidence, skills, and networks they need to thrive in life, school, and future careers.
This isn’t “just volunteering.”
It’s a bridge into community, purpose, and possibility.
Our Vision
To create a city where young people, especially those who are often overlooked, have direct access to experiences, relationships, and opportunities that help them grow into confident leaders and contributors.
What The Plug Offers
The Plug gives youth a structured way to build experience through service, while feeling supported every step of the way.
1) Leadership & Life Skills
Participants develop real-world skills that translate anywhere:
Communication and professionalism
Accountability and teamwork
Time management and problem-solving
Confidence and leadership presence
2) Hands-On Volunteer Placements
Youth are “plugged in” to meaningful community experiences such as:
Arts events and showcases
Community activations and festivals
Tune In Foundation programs and productions
Front-of-house support, hospitality, and guest services
Event support (setup, transitions, coordination support)
3) Mentorship & Positive Community
The Plug is intentionally built to be more than tasks—it’s about belonging.
Participants build strong peer connections and gain access to safe, consistent adults who guide and encourage them.
4) Pathways to Future Opportunities
Youth leave with":
Volunteer hours and experience they can clearly speak to
Improved confidence navigating professional spaces
References (where appropriate) and stronger resumes
Exposure to creative-industry and community-career pathways
Why It Matters
Too many young people have potential, but lack access to networks, access to spaces where they feel safe, and access to opportunities that build real confidence.
The Plug exists to change that.
We meet youth with high expectations and real support so they don’t just “participate”… they grow, lead, and belong.
Program Growth
The Plug was introduced in 2023 as a small pilot and expanded in 2024, reaching 41 high school youth. Demand continues to grow across school communities, and our next step is scaling capacity to serve even more students with the structure and support they deserve.
Who It’s For
The Plug is designed for high school-aged youth who are:
Looking for community and leadership growth
Interested in arts, events, or community work (no experience needed)
Ready to learn, show up consistently, and be part of something positive
How It Works
